Water Saving Idea's
Water is a precious resource. By using less water, everyone can contribute to healthy catchments and rivers. There are many things that we can all do to save water - in the home, around the garden and at work.
In the home
- fit water efficient showerheads in new and existing homes
- fit dual flush toilet systems in new and existing homes
- fix leaks from taps and toilets
- buy appliances (e.g. dishwashers and washing machines) with the highest water conservation rating.
- use dishwashers and washing machines only when you have a full load
- turn off the tap while you are cleaning your teeth or cooking, and
- take shorter showers.
Around the yard and garden
- wash your car only when it needs it and use a bucket to save water
- add mulch to gardens to reduce evaporation
- add organic matter into garden beds during early spring
- aerate soil to reduce run off
- plant native shrubs
- water roots, not leaves
- water during early morning or early evening to retain moisture, and
- sweep paths, instead of hosing them.
At work
- install water saving devices and fix leaks
- recycle wastewater where it makes good environmental, economic and social sense
- explore options for greater use of treated effluent at industrial premises.
