Water Saving Idea's

Water is a precious resource. By using less water, everyone can contribute to healthy catchments and rivers. There are many things that we can all do to save water - in the home, around the garden and at work.

In the home

  • fit water efficient showerheads in new and existing homes
  • fit dual flush toilet systems in new and existing homes
  • fix leaks from taps and toilets
  • buy appliances (e.g. dishwashers and washing machines) with the highest water conservation rating.
  • use dishwashers and washing machines only when you have a full load
  • turn off the tap while you are cleaning your teeth or cooking, and
  • take shorter showers.

Around the yard and garden

  • wash your car only when it needs it and use a bucket to save water
  • add mulch to gardens to reduce evaporation
  • add organic matter into garden beds during early spring
  • aerate soil to reduce run off
  • plant native shrubs
  • water roots, not leaves
  • water during early morning or early evening to retain moisture, and
  • sweep paths, instead of hosing them.

At work

  • install water saving devices and fix leaks
  • recycle wastewater where it makes good environmental, economic and social sense
  • explore options for greater use of treated effluent at industrial premises.
